Some 23 year old in our office asked "who?" When we were discussing David Bowie dying a few years back. I went through his hits and she hadn't heard any of them. I couldn't get over it.

Did you ask your parents?

And The WHO have not sold 200 million albums. If that is your metric she has probably heard of Rihanna, Eminem, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Bruno Mars, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Drake, who have all sold more albums than the WHO, some significantly.

I like the Who much better than any of those and think they should last in minds of people but if albums sales are your measuring stick they lose out.

So probably not fair to compare generation of music on raw album sales alone.

Re: Steve McQueen
Yeah sorry IOC, bit of a silly comparison by sticking someone who my 80 year old parents wont even have heard of alongside a band who have probably sold 200 million albums.

Girl at work has never heard of Pink Floyd either.

I think the "problem" is the proliferation of choices, and sources of choices. It's really easy to hole oneself on Youtube or Netflix or wherever and only see the sorts of things you'd be interested. And by see I don't just mean watch, I mean get told of at all.

And to go the other way, much of WHO has probably never heard of "Despacito."

Re: Steve McQueen
Well I was brought up listening to the Everley Brothers, Adam Faith, Buddy Holly, Elvis music etc when I was young. Then these modern bands like the Beatles, Stones, Kinks and the Who came along & spoilt it all!

Takashi Miike 3:24 Sat Sep 21

She was not an obscure pianist from the 1920s. She was the top selling artist for weeks and weeks in the 40s (twenty years before my impression of when a lot of WHOers were born)

Dick Powell was a popular ladies man and box office draw during a certain era.

Just because they were not in things that were iconic to you does not mean that they are not iconic to some and burned into people of certain age's memory.

That is my only point.

Takashi Miike 3:24 Sat Sep 21
Re: Steve McQueen
why does it matter when an album was released and how is an obscure pianist from the 1920s in any way comparable culturally to The Who? the other one you used with Dick fucking Powell was equally pointless

The Who's biggest albums where between '69 and 73 almost 20 years before she was born.

Do you know names like Harriet Cohen or Teresa Brewer who were big 20 years before when I think a lot of WHOer were born?

Honestly curious.

Re: Steve McQueen
A large amount of the younger generation are ignorant with anything historical.

Work with an intelligent girl who is 30 and who has never heard of bands like The Who.

Can maybe say its because their parents didnt get them into certain music and films, but the excuse of it being before they were born with most things historical is a lazy one.

I have mates who are 40 who looked dumbfounded when I was talking about Roy Orbison a few years ago. Literally none of them knew who he was. I was so angry I walked out of the pub.
